How am I supposed to utilize my baby’s blanket?

February 9th, 2010 | by admin |

I’m 37 weeks and this is my first baby. I know that babies aren’t supposed to be put to bed with huge blankets and they should be swaddled with a receiving blanket, but for how long? I also got some regular baby blankets that are soft and have a different texture than the receiving blankets. Will he use that one and what’s the safest way to let him use it?

You can choose to use the blankets however you see fit. You will probably instinctively chose whatever is best for your baby.

It is recommended that baby’s not be put to bed with big, fluffy comforters due to the increased rates of SIDS. So if you have one of those kinds of blankets, you can put it up on the wall or put it away until the child is older.

Many newborns are comforted by swaddling. Some are not. You can try it (with whatever blanket you choose) and see if your baby likes it. Keep doing it as long as he likes it. When he has outgrown it, he will let you know by fussing if you try to swaddle him ( or kicking out of the blanket)

Swaddle your baby in a receiving blanket, put your baby where s/he is going to sleep, & place the blanket over your little baby burrito. S/He’ll wake up every few hours, so you’ll quickly get to know if your baby likes the swaddle, the blanket, or both. My son was frustrated with the swaddle from birth (always wanted his arms free), & within a month we stopped swaddling & just used the baby blanket draped over him (which he kicked off over time).

FYI, sleep sacks are a great alternative to blankets – warm & cozy, & your baby won’t be able to kick it off. Grobag makes some excellent ones.

    Good luck, & congrats!

I used those blankets to throw over the baby when she was in the car seat, if we were out in the stroller, on the floor to lay her down on, or to throw over her if she was in the bouncy chair when she was young, to use as a nursing cover… You’ll find lots of uses for them…

My boys have slept with a blanket since they were born. They were also covered with a blanket on top of being swaddled in the NICU. Once they were a month old, they no longer liked being swaddled, and I just put them to bed with a blanket. Now they sleep in my bed, under the same blanket I use. Just lay it over him underneath his arms so that he can’t accidentally pull it over his face.

some babies like mine HATE to be swaddled. we would start crying when we did that, even now that shes a year old she gates it you pit a blanket around her. but the bigger thicker baby blankets do get a lot of use though. we used to always have one on her legs and stuff when we took her out and carried her around in her carrier car seat. and if we carried her into a store or whatever we would wrap her in the same blanket we put on her in her car seat. especially during the cold winter. during the summer it got so hot we didnt need one but we would bring those recieving blanket to hang over her carrier and block out the sun from her. those baby blanket are also good for night time, we would cover her with one of those. we got a lot of use from them, so dont worry that they will go unused. they are very handy.
