EXPERT CROCHETERS! How do I crochet a scallop edge for a baby blanket?

Monday, January 4th, 2010

To give you an idea of my project, it is a 7sq by 7sq granny square baby blanket (49 squares total). Each of the squares has a 1 inch border of white and all are joined together by white. There are vertical ridges on each side where the yarn has been joined. My colors are: white, purple, pink, blue, yellow, and green – all pastel. I want to incorporate all of the colors into the border. Any fun ideas that are fast?

Here are some instructions: http://www.woolcrafting.com/crochet-scallop-edging.html

I agree with the previous answer…use varigated yarn for the multicolor look without having to change yarns frequently.

if im 5ft 6in an i want a blanket longer then me what size do I get I want a throw Blanket !! I see a lot ?

Friday, October 23rd, 2009

50×60 is that longer then myself ??? if not what size would be longer then me !

A queen size throw blanket should be a good size for you. You could always go for a king just to have plenty of extra blanket. We bought one at Target that is amazingly soft! I fell in love the second I touched it. It comes in twin, full, queen, and king with a variety of colors. It’s part of their "Home" line, and is available in stores (I haven’t seen it online). The price was just down to $29.99 last week, and we paid $39.99 about a month before that!

hello everyone. what do call the edgin material for a throw and blanket and cahn i buy it in yards and colors?

Tuesday, October 20th, 2009

i finished the throw/ blanket but you can see the outer edges along the blanket and would like to hide it.. first time making one?/ need your help.. thanks a bunch

It is called "binding". You can buy it at any store that sells sewing materials. You will need to measure around the perimeter of your blanket then purchase enough to go arount the edge pluse a few extra inches for making your turns. At the edges you will want to fold the binding like you would make a pleat. Congrats! Doesn’t it feel good to be creative.

How can I wash a black and white bed blanket so that the black doesn’t fade but the white part is brighter?

Sunday, October 18th, 2009

I have a large comforter blanket on my bed that is white with a black shadow design all over it. How do I wash the blanket so that I can get the white part of it whiter (it’s starting to look a bit dingy) but so that the black design doesn’t fade? Is there a special detergent or method?

Use Woolite in cold water. It’s a delicate detergent and won’t fade colors.

Can anyone give me a knitting pattern for a Winnie the pooh baby blanket?

Friday, October 16th, 2009

My cousin is having a Winnie the Pooh theme for her nursery/baby shower and I really wanted to knit her a baby blanket but I can’t find a good pattern. It has to be remotely easy since I haven’t been knitting that long, but I’ll try anything. Thanks in advance!

http://ca.geocities.com/alibeee/ClassicPooh.html that site will give you the charts of pooh bear. but to use a chart you need to know how to knit with a bunch of colors at the same time. sounds confusing but really isnt, i picked up on it in like a day. I would suggest making the blanket in panels or squares to make it easier on yourself, well in actuality its really the only way to do it. just add like 10 or more stitches to the sides in the main color of your blanket when you do the pooh bear square. it wont look so weird that way. Hope this helps. if you have more questions feel free to email me.

How to turn an old blanket into a pretty throw?

Thursday, October 15th, 2009

I have this old and rather ugly, but warm and large blanket which I would like to turn into a throw. It is synthetic so I can’t dye it. Trimming it with nice ribbon won’t do as it has rather oldfashioned pattern on it so the trim wouldn’t improve it much. I considered putting it into floral duvet cover and stitching it but the blanket itself is too thick to do this on my sewing machine. Any ideas how to beautify it?

I would put it into the duvet cover and then use a large yarn needle to make a couple of stitches to pin the blanket in place inside the duvet (just sew the duvet closed with the blanket inside it). Place maybe 4 stitches in each direction (4×4=16 ties total) and tie off the yarn all on one side of the duvet (on the top of the duvet – use a color to compliment the duvet colors) and leave about 1" of the yarn ends on. The yarn looks like a decorative "tied" quilt and the ties hold the blanket to the same orientation as the duvet without having to put in all on the machine together.
OR you can use some of the newer iron on fabric-to-fabric adhesives and cut decorative patterns from a nicer fabric in brighter colors and iron them onto parts ot the old blanket to spice it up a little.

What are some different ways to edge a fleece blanket?

Friday, October 9th, 2009

I don’t like the ties and I tried stitching the edge with thread, but I didn’t like the way it looked. Any other ideas? I know how to crochet, but the blanket is for a man to take to his football games…not sure crocheted edging would be football chic. ;-) Does it even need to be edged, or will the fleece unravel?

One of my favorites is with twisted "rope" made from a couple of colors of fleece:
http://www.cascadelayers.com/tfleece_cord.htm

Sew the cording to the edge of the fleece using a simple zigzag… zig into the edge of the blanket, zag into the cord… you can do the same thing with a purchased cord, like: http://www.rei.com/product/716685 or
http://www.amazon.com/s?ie=UTF8&rh=n%3A3402911&page=1

But no, no edging is needed for fleece. In fact, my family prefers just a simple straight edge and rounded corners.

Baby Blanket Secrets

Thursday, October 8th, 2009

Babies slept more often, especially within the first year of life. And as a parent, you want to provide the best sleeping area and sleep accessories to give your baby a comfortable and sound slumber.

One of the best gifts you can give to your baby is his or her very own baby blanket. This piece of cloth is oftentimes essential in promoting a good sleep on your baby. But if a baby blanket is uncomfortable enough, expect you baby to be crying at times and skin rashes to appear at some areas of his delicate body.

There are many types, designs, and colors of baby blankets that are available in the market today. There are brand that cost you quite an amount, but there are other brands of that are less expensive, yet with a good quality of material.

The most common material used on blanket that most moms purchased for their babies is cotton. The material itself is soft, comfortable, and does not shed off tiny strands of fibers. It is also effective in thermo-regulating the baby’s temperature, especially when room temperature is low.

Another popular type for baby blanket nowadays is the swaddling baby blankets. It is very effective in promoting a sound and uninterrupted sleep on babies, especially on long hours of the night. Moreover, babies can be hold in place, without being slipped out. This type of blanket is also durable and warm.

Other designs of baby blankets include a built-in pocket that serves as a warm pouch for baby’s feet, and other blankets having feet that wraps the baby in different types. These special baby blankets are ideal especially when taking the baby out in a stroller or inside the car.

If you want to make your baby’s blanket a piece of memorabilia, you can also personalized it with his or her name or nickname. Personalized baby blankets are ideal for those who cherish their baby’s “baby years” a lot.

Choosing the right color for the blanket is up to you. But usually, if you have a baby girl, the colors you should opt for are pink and yellow, and if you have a baby boy, you can choose colors, such as blue and green. White baby blankets can be used for both genders. It is also recommended that you should choose pastel colors, or light shades of colors rather than dark colors, because it adds to the comforting ambiance, and is not delicate for your baby’s developing vision.

Sizes of baby blankets also vary. But if you are going to public places, you can bring only those that have smaller dimensions, so that it won’t be a heavy load in your part. Small baby blankets are ideal for a lying place for your baby in changing his or her diaper in public spots.

Remember; always give the best for your baby’s needs. So when choosing the baby blanket for your child, always opt for something that can give him or her an optimum comfort, and keeps him or her safe all the time.
