Where can I order a personalized fleece blanket?

Friday, February 5th, 2010

I found one website, but the blanket was 50" x 60" and I think that would be a bit small for a adult male.
Also, this website doesn’t have much color to chose from and such.

So does anyone know a good website I could go to?
Thanks so much! And HAPPY HOLIDAYS!

Most of the "blankets" you find personalized will not be real full-sized blankets, but are meant to be "throws." Regular size for a throw is usually about 50"x60". They’re meant to drape over the back of a sofa or to cuddle up with while watching TV or reading. Go to www.blair.com and check around there. They may have a real blanket that’s personalizable. If not, consider getting a nice plain one and adding a personalization yourself. A local tailor or embroidery shop may be able to do it for you if you don’t want to do it yourself. Most dry cleaners will have a tailor on premises or on call. Check your phonebook for a local embroidery shop.

Can i use a fleece blanket as bedding for my guinea pig ?

Wednesday, February 3rd, 2010

or does it have to be a special kind of fleece?

Yes, but you have to do it properly. You can’t just throw any old blanket down, otherwise it will not be effective at all. You don’t have to litter train your pigs to use fleece.

The "fleece method" actually uses two types of fabric.

On the bottom of the cage you put a thick layer of a highly absorbant fabric, such as a few towels or a thick cotton mattress pad.
On top of this you put down one layer of fleece. It can be fleece cut straight off the roll, or a blanket, but make sure it is 100% polyester fleece.

Fleece is not absorbant – it acts a bit like a sieve! When the guinea pigs pee the liquid is wicked away – it goes down through the fleece and is absorbed by the bottom layer. This way the pee gets locked away (so it doesn’t smell) but the surface dries very quickly, so your pigs are not sitting in a wet patch.

Obviously when using this method the poops just sit on the surface, so you have to remove them every day (or twice a day depending on cage size and number of pigs). You can do this using a dustpan and brush or a hoover, or even a soup ladel!
It helps to secure the fabric somehow to stop it moving around. If it is long enough you can clip the fleece to the sides of the cage using strong bulldog clips. Or can you weight it down in the corners using bricks. (I use both)

So, you poop scoop daily, and do a full clean out once or twice a week. Just remove all the poops and other loose stuff and throw all the fabric in the wash.

Obviously you will want two sets of bedding so you put down clean stuff while the dirty set is in the wash.

Most pigs won’t bother to chew fleece as they generally only have the flat surface rather than loose tempting bits! And fleece (unlike towels or similar materials) does not split into long threads which would be a choking hazard.

One important thing to mention is that fleece needs to be looked after to make it work. When you first buy it, you need to wash it at least 4 times before using it to ensure it will wick properly.
At NO point should you ever use fabric softener / conditioner in the wash with fleece, as this puts a waterproof barrier on it which stops it working. Just use normal detergent and a little vinegar.

I’ve had my pigs on fleece for about a year and I LOVE it. I have a large cage (about 13.5 sq feet) so loose bedding would be impractical and expensive. My pigs have never tried to chew the fleece, it looks better and I don’t get that wierd dusty loose bedding smell. It is also much less work.
I used to use loose bedding in a similar sized pen for my old rabbit. I cleaned it out completely once a week but it took me about an hour! With fleece, daily poop scooping takes under a minute (I do it before feeding) and the full clean out only takes 15 minutes and that includes changing thier hay box, preparing veggies etc.

For more detailed info on how to use the fleece method check out the fleece threads in this link http://www.guineapigcages.com/forum/bedding/

Hope this helps!

How big should I make a fleece blanket?

Wednesday, February 3rd, 2010

The ones where you tie the edges together.. how many yards of fabric should i get so i have a good-sized blanket that will cover my whole body and keep me warm in the winter?!

I would use 1.5 yards, maybe a little bigger, but it gets cumbersome to work with if it’s too big.

Is it safe to put a hot water bottle on top of the bird cage, between the fleece blanket hes covered with?

Tuesday, February 2nd, 2010

Its quite cold tonight as its fog and frost out. Its usually very warm in here though but concerned during the night if my budgie feels the cold when the heating is off.

Toby, your bird can thermoregulate if it has feathers. It is sweet you want him to be warm, but unless it is below freezing he will be okay. Besides heat rises so putting heat on top of the cage would not warm him.

You might buy a warming perch for him – I have one for my parrot. It plugs in and keeps their little tosies warm. It rarely goes below 50 in my bird room but their feet have no feathers although they do hunker down onto their feet and cover them with nice warm feathers.

Since you cover him I am sure he will be okay.
