Where can I order a personalized fleece blanket?

Friday, February 5th, 2010

I found one website, but the blanket was 50" x 60" and I think that would be a bit small for a adult male.
Also, this website doesn’t have much color to chose from and such.

So does anyone know a good website I could go to?
Thanks so much! And HAPPY HOLIDAYS!

Most of the "blankets" you find personalized will not be real full-sized blankets, but are meant to be "throws." Regular size for a throw is usually about 50"x60". They’re meant to drape over the back of a sofa or to cuddle up with while watching TV or reading. Go to www.blair.com and check around there. They may have a real blanket that’s personalizable. If not, consider getting a nice plain one and adding a personalization yourself. A local tailor or embroidery shop may be able to do it for you if you don’t want to do it yourself. Most dry cleaners will have a tailor on premises or on call. Check your phonebook for a local embroidery shop.

Can i use a fleece blanket as bedding for my guinea pig ?

Wednesday, February 3rd, 2010

or does it have to be a special kind of fleece?

Yes, but you have to do it properly. You can’t just throw any old blanket down, otherwise it will not be effective at all. You don’t have to litter train your pigs to use fleece.

The "fleece method" actually uses two types of fabric.

On the bottom of the cage you put a thick layer of a highly absorbant fabric, such as a few towels or a thick cotton mattress pad.
On top of this you put down one layer of fleece. It can be fleece cut straight off the roll, or a blanket, but make sure it is 100% polyester fleece.

Fleece is not absorbant – it acts a bit like a sieve! When the guinea pigs pee the liquid is wicked away – it goes down through the fleece and is absorbed by the bottom layer. This way the pee gets locked away (so it doesn’t smell) but the surface dries very quickly, so your pigs are not sitting in a wet patch.

Obviously when using this method the poops just sit on the surface, so you have to remove them every day (or twice a day depending on cage size and number of pigs). You can do this using a dustpan and brush or a hoover, or even a soup ladel!
It helps to secure the fabric somehow to stop it moving around. If it is long enough you can clip the fleece to the sides of the cage using strong bulldog clips. Or can you weight it down in the corners using bricks. (I use both)

So, you poop scoop daily, and do a full clean out once or twice a week. Just remove all the poops and other loose stuff and throw all the fabric in the wash.

Obviously you will want two sets of bedding so you put down clean stuff while the dirty set is in the wash.

Most pigs won’t bother to chew fleece as they generally only have the flat surface rather than loose tempting bits! And fleece (unlike towels or similar materials) does not split into long threads which would be a choking hazard.

One important thing to mention is that fleece needs to be looked after to make it work. When you first buy it, you need to wash it at least 4 times before using it to ensure it will wick properly.
At NO point should you ever use fabric softener / conditioner in the wash with fleece, as this puts a waterproof barrier on it which stops it working. Just use normal detergent and a little vinegar.

I’ve had my pigs on fleece for about a year and I LOVE it. I have a large cage (about 13.5 sq feet) so loose bedding would be impractical and expensive. My pigs have never tried to chew the fleece, it looks better and I don’t get that wierd dusty loose bedding smell. It is also much less work.
I used to use loose bedding in a similar sized pen for my old rabbit. I cleaned it out completely once a week but it took me about an hour! With fleece, daily poop scooping takes under a minute (I do it before feeding) and the full clean out only takes 15 minutes and that includes changing thier hay box, preparing veggies etc.

For more detailed info on how to use the fleece method check out the fleece threads in this link http://www.guineapigcages.com/forum/bedding/

Hope this helps!

How to handle a shedding blanket?

Tuesday, February 2nd, 2010

I have a beautiful red throw blanket. I am not quite sure of the material – it is similar to a wool. It wasn’t very expensive, but it is my favorite. Unfortunately, it sheds everywhere. On the sofa, on the carpet, on my clothing. Is there a way to remove any excess "fluff" to avoid any shedding? Or is this just the way the blanket is?

I would check the washing instructions on the label. A lot of times if you just wash and dry it a time or two, that will get rid of all those fluffies that are coming off of it.

If that solution doesn’t work for you, take it outside and shake the heck out of it, maybe even beat it with a broom, like you would a rug.

How to make a Queen Size Fleece Blanket? patterns?

Saturday, January 30th, 2010

Anyone know how to make a nosew or very little sew fleece blanket to fit a queen sized bed?
How much yardage is needed?

Here are three links with pictures (I’m very visual and a picture tells me more than a 1000 words):

http://www.linusidaho.org/finishafleeceblanket.htm

http://www.allkindsofbabystuff.com/no-sew-fleece-blanket-pictures2.html

http://www.bfranklincrafts.com/CraftIdeas/CraftIdea-FleeceBlanket.html

Since fleece normally comes on a width of about 54", you’ll need to piece the fleece to fit a queen size bed. I’ve pasted standard sizing for you below:

Here’s a list of bed quilt dimensions to help you make your quilt / blanket "just the right size":

Twin – A quilt made to fit a twin-size bed should measure at least 63" x 87".

Double – A quilt made to fit a double-size bed should measure at least 78" x 87".

Queen – A quilt made to fit a queen-size bed should measure at least 84" x 92".

King – A quilt made to fit a king-size bed should measure at least 100" x 92".

Have fun making the blanket.

how do i make a baby blanket like this?

Thursday, January 28th, 2010

I am trying to make a baby blanket, the kind that is a small square made with different colors and textures and has ribbons sewn on the ends. its more of a toy maybe. i would love to make one for my daughter but i do not know how although it seems like it would be somewhat simple. can someone please give me advice or offer a helpful website. thanks!

I think you’re wanting a "Taggy" or "Sensory" blanket. They’re very simple to make. Is this what you are talking about?
http://www.etsy.com/view_listing.php?listing_id=9504816

Start with two pieces of flannel, approximately 10 to 12 inch squares.

Next, cut pieces of ribbon about 6 inches long.

Lay out one piece of flannel, print side up. Make a loop out of your ribbon and pin it to the sides of your flannel where you want it to be. Making sure the loop part is to the inside of your fabric.

Next, lay your second piece of flannel on top of the other piece but put this piece print side down. Your two pieces of fabric should be print sides together, sandwiching the ribbon loops inside.

Pin the two pieces of flannel together and sew around them, using a 1/2 inch seam, leaving a small opening, for turning.

Turn your blanket right side out and press it. Make sure you press the open part to where the raw edge is up in the blanket. Now topstitch around the blanket, making sure your topstitching catches the fabric where you left the opening.

Press again…. Presto! You have a taggy blanket!!

Hope this helps!! Happy Sewing!!

Does anyone know where i can purchase a "Guardian Angel" Fleece Blanket, entitled "Direct Thy Path’s?"

Friday, October 23rd, 2009

OK, anyone who likes Angels has more than likely seen this picture…. It’s the one w/ a Guardian Angel standing on a bridge, hovering…aka "guarding" the two little children. I would love to have this picture on a fleece blanket; not a throw… a queen or king sized fleece blanket, or comforter.

A few places to check: ebay, amazon, your local florist shops, christian book stores and Hallmark stores. Maybe even Barnes and Noble. If you have no luck, there are alot of places like print shops and such that will transfer any picture onto a fleece blanket, just like they do to tshirts.

Does anyone know where I can find a free pattern and directions for a crochet prayer afghan or throw blanket?

Thursday, October 15th, 2009

Lion Brand’s site had a free prayer shawl pattern. It uses four skeins of homespun. Sounds like a lot, but it works up pretty quickly.

lionbrandyarn.com

Update: I used Lion Brand’s "pattern finder" and searched for "prayer afghan" and a free pattern did come up.

How to turn an old blanket into a pretty throw?

Thursday, October 15th, 2009

I have this old and rather ugly, but warm and large blanket which I would like to turn into a throw. It is synthetic so I can’t dye it. Trimming it with nice ribbon won’t do as it has rather oldfashioned pattern on it so the trim wouldn’t improve it much. I considered putting it into floral duvet cover and stitching it but the blanket itself is too thick to do this on my sewing machine. Any ideas how to beautify it?

I would put it into the duvet cover and then use a large yarn needle to make a couple of stitches to pin the blanket in place inside the duvet (just sew the duvet closed with the blanket inside it). Place maybe 4 stitches in each direction (4×4=16 ties total) and tie off the yarn all on one side of the duvet (on the top of the duvet – use a color to compliment the duvet colors) and leave about 1" of the yarn ends on. The yarn looks like a decorative "tied" quilt and the ties hold the blanket to the same orientation as the duvet without having to put in all on the machine together.
OR you can use some of the newer iron on fabric-to-fabric adhesives and cut decorative patterns from a nicer fabric in brighter colors and iron them onto parts ot the old blanket to spice it up a little.
