this is my first time knitting, and id like to know how to knit a baby blanket… i have yarn and sticks, but i dont know how to start making simple stitches. HELP
you’ll need to learn the basics.
knit and purl – for great "mini video"
http://www.knittinghelp.com/knitting/basic_techniques/ this will teach you the ACTUAL stitches.
but you actually may find it helpful to have a pattern, where they will help you go through the actual process for making a blanket. Unless you have SUPER long needles, I think it may be difficult for you to complete a blanket on one round of the needles.
Before a baby blanket, start with something small- a potholder, a scarf or something to get used to the action. It is easy once you figure it out, but the first couple rounds are going to be pretty difficult.
I completely taught myself how to knit off of the internet. so you can do it.

Knitting a baby blanket, which is usually about 2 feet by 3 feet, requires finding a type of yarn that is machine washable and avoiding yarns with fibers that shed, such as mohair, angora and alpaca. Knit a baby-friendly blanket using decorative stitches with information from an advanced knitter in this free video on knitting.

I bought some flannel to make baby blankets but don’t know what edgings I could use other than crochet. Any ideas? Thanks
Hello,
You could always use any crochet edgings for the blanket. With a steel hook you could directly make the stitches on the blanket and go all around doing a sc and 3 to 4 chains and then again a sc at equal distance. Then use the chain loops to start your lace edgings.
Other than crochet edging, you can use any pretty lace to stitch on to the blanket edge. You can edge the blankets with pretty printed bias bindings. If these are not easily available you can make your own with either nursery prints or polka dots. Add a ruffle of polka dotted cotton material. It makes the blanket look real special.
Hope this is useful.
Sandhya.

My daughter knitted a beautiful baby blanket with wool yarn for her 1st baby. In the past she always washed it on delicate and hung or laid it to dry. While she was in the hospital giving birth to her 2nd son, her dad was trying to help and do laundry for her. He put the blanket in the dryer and it shrunk to about 1/3 the size. She was heart broken about this because she wanted to use it for the new baby too. Is there any way to get this back to original size or at least close to it?
Take the blanket to the cleaners and tell them what happened. Then ask them if you can have the blanket blocked. Not all knitting patterns can be blocked. Patterns stitches such as cables, ribbing, or any raised stitch can not be blocked. You will also need to know what type of yarn was used, if it was acrylic it can not be blocked because acrylic yarn is actually spun plastic which shrinks when dried. If it is natural fibers, you will be able to have it blocked. Blocking is a method where the finished product is stretched out on a board while it is wet and secured down. It is then dried in that shape, once removed maintaining it’s shape.

i know how to knit quite well, but its really had for me to cast on 100 stitches. i wont have a sewing machine. is there any was to make a CUTE baby blanket without one?
Yes you can! One idea is to make a fleece tie blanket with just two pieces of fleece and scissors.
Here are some instructions;

You are only limited by what cute fleece you can find. It’s also cute to make a smaller doll size one for a girl to have a matching one for her dolly.
Good luck.

My cousin is having a Winnie the Pooh theme for her nursery/baby shower and I really wanted to knit her a baby blanket but I can’t find a good pattern. It has to be remotely easy since I haven’t been knitting that long, but I’ll try anything. Thanks in advance!
http://ca.geocities.com/alibeee/ClassicPooh.html that site will give you the charts of pooh bear. but to use a chart you need to know how to knit with a bunch of colors at the same time. sounds confusing but really isnt, i picked up on it in like a day. I would suggest making the blanket in panels or squares to make it easier on yourself, well in actuality its really the only way to do it. just add like 10 or more stitches to the sides in the main color of your blanket when you do the pooh bear square. it wont look so weird that way. Hope this helps. if you have more questions feel free to email me.

I have this old and rather ugly, but warm and large blanket which I would like to turn into a throw. It is synthetic so I can’t dye it. Trimming it with nice ribbon won’t do as it has rather oldfashioned pattern on it so the trim wouldn’t improve it much. I considered putting it into floral duvet cover and stitching it but the blanket itself is too thick to do this on my sewing machine. Any ideas how to beautify it?
I would put it into the duvet cover and then use a large yarn needle to make a couple of stitches to pin the blanket in place inside the duvet (just sew the duvet closed with the blanket inside it). Place maybe 4 stitches in each direction (4×4=16 ties total) and tie off the yarn all on one side of the duvet (on the top of the duvet – use a color to compliment the duvet colors) and leave about 1" of the yarn ends on. The yarn looks like a decorative "tied" quilt and the ties hold the blanket to the same orientation as the duvet without having to put in all on the machine together.
OR you can use some of the newer iron on fabric-to-fabric adhesives and cut decorative patterns from a nicer fabric in brighter colors and iron them onto parts ot the old blanket to spice it up a little.

I have about 170 stitches on a 14" knitting needle. Do I need any more to make a decent width for a baby blanket? How long in width may it be after I am finished knitting and it is removed from the needle?
It will depend on the thickness of your yarn and the gauge of the needle although it sounds a lot of stitches..
I suggest you look at patterns on the following sites to get a better idea of size as most of them have pictures:

I am making a baby blanket for my daughter, I am using flannel fabric with basting in between that. I bought this invisible thread to sew the binding on. The binding is a satin one by Wright. The only problem is my thread keeps breaking. I think I need a different type of thread or better quality. What would you recommend?
Don’t use invisible thread — it’s like wire, and it’s possible the baby’s fingers will become entangled in the stitches. Just use plain old dressmaker thread in a matching color. Cotton or spun poly.

I want to put a decorative edge on a baby blanket i am making for a friend, but I’m not familiar with stitches other than the slip stitch and a single stitch. Any tips? Any website you can recommend?
I would recommend you do a picot edging. It’s just a series of single crochet, slip stitch, and chains. Here is a list of videos that show you how to do it:
http://www.youtube.com/results?search_type=&search_query=crochet+picot&aq=f
You can make the picots as close or far apart as you want. I would recommend every three sc, but you could do every four or five too.
I would also recommend you watch these youtube videos on how to do other stitches: http://www.youtube.com/view_play_list?p=D949DB26ED937B07
Email me if you have any questions about anything. I would be happy to help.
