can i wash my down feather blanket in the washer and dryer?

Tuesday, February 2nd, 2010

its smaller, not made for a bed, its a throw blanket but i just dont want to have to take it to the cleaners. is it going to damage the blanket to wash it in the washing machine and put it in the dryer?

I wash my down comforters, blankets, jackets, even sleeping bags, all the time! Put them in a front loader on gentle or handwash. If you don’t have access to a front-loader, you can still use a top loader, just go for the most gentle option. The first important trick is to NOT use detergent, because detergent damages the feathers. Use a gentle-wash SOAP, like Woolite.
Wash in cold water. It will look all clumpy when you take it out. Not to worry.
Now that you have it washed, you need to dry in the dryer on air fluff only (NO HEAT!). To avoid having it stay clumpy, you need to put something firm into the dryer with it that will move around at a different rate than the fluffy down item. A clean tennis ball is the classic suggestion, but I use a silicone oven mit, because I don’t happen to have a tennis ball! It works fine.

How do you wash a electric blanket?

Thursday, October 22nd, 2009

My kids electric blanket has no tag for info. Anyone done this before? Please fill me in!!!!!!

You can ask a dry cleaner if they can do it for you, if you really don’t want to ruin it if it’s expensive. If it were just me though, I would be fine washing it on low spin in a washing machine, and letting it air dry. I do the same thing for my warming blanket (and expensive sweat shirts) because they can’t be put in the dryer.

You could also try to seal any exposed wires if you want, but the as long as the blanket is dried right away, and not sitting in water for a long time, nothing should rust -and as far as my experience with cellphones, mp3 players, and other electronics, a little water in the washing machine, or the occasional toilet water, never hurt anyone.

Keep warm! =)

Dog Car Seat Cover

Saturday, October 17th, 2009

The family dog is a staple is many households. For a lot of us, our dogs are simply just another family member. We love taking our dog out on walks, running around the backyard and for the occasional road trip. The thing that makes having the dog in the car a bit of a challenge is that unlike the rest of the family, he’s not taking a bath everyday. We needed to find a way to protect the upholstery without having to put the dog in a cage. We found the perfect solution in a dog car seat cover.

We used to use an old blanket to protect the back seat of the car, but that was fraught with problems. Notably the dog would move and so would the blanket. With the dog car seat cover that’s no longer a problem, as it stays put even when Rover is moving back and forth from window to window.

The main different with a regular car seat cover and one made for the family pet is that the latter is easy to remove and made of a different material. Whereas a regular cover is usually made of some plush material, the dog car seat cover is made with plastic. It keeps the car’s seat protected in the event that the dog can’t hold it until we get to where we’re going.

Some animals also get a bit queasy from the motion of the car. It’s very unpleasant having to be the one who needs to clean up the mess. If you have a dog car seat cover, it’s simply a matter of removing the cover, and throwing it in the trash or into a washing machine. You’ll also probably want to leave the car windows open for a time to air out the car.

You may think that the choice of patterns isn’t as varied as they are with a traditional seat cover. In fact, there are many different colors and patterns in a seat cover made for an animal. You’ll certainly be able to find a dog car seat cover to match the inner decor of your vehicle, but keep in mind that it’s not going to be on the seat all the time, unless you take the dog everywhere with you.

Even if the dog doesn’t have any accidents in the car, you need to clean the cover from time to time. Depending on the label, you may be advised to either wipe the dog car seat cover with a damp cloth, hand wash it or throw it into the washing machine. In almost all cases, drying flat is recommended so as not to damage the plastic in the dryer.

If you’ve got a dog that you like to take on road trips, you’d do well to invest in one. It will not only save the interior of your car from accidents, it will help keep the smell of the dog out of the fabric.

You Need To Buy A Dog Bed

Wednesday, October 14th, 2009

By observing your pet, you will have a better idea of what product to look for as his daily comfortable resting place. Dog beds today come in all sizes, colors, shapes, materials and to suit any pooch and any decor. If that’s not enough you can even have dog beds custom made. The bed will give your pet somewhere to feel secure and safe.

How Do you choose the Right Dog Bed?

Watch your dogs behavior. Does he like to stay warm under the blankets? Does he avoid the bed because he needs to cool off? Does he sprawl and stretch out completely? Answering these questions will help you choose the right bed for your dog.

You should also consider the size of your room and size of the bed needed for the comfort of your dog. If he’s relaxed and fully stretched out, measure his length and add about five inches to get the best fit.

A good canine bed provides protection and a cozy warm place to sleep for a hound that spends most of his time outside. Beds with sides are great for dogs that like to hang their head over the edge. Cushions and support should be considered for older dogs, as well as pooches with other joint or bone problems.

Dog Bed Features and Benefits

Picking the right dog bed will help with allergies and also expidite cleaning up. It provides you with a single spot where the majority of your dogs shedding and/or dander is contained. Choose a style with a machine washable cover that can easily be thrown in the washing machine when dirty or soiled to make sure the bed is easy to clean. Some beds are also specifically treated to eliminate mold, fungus, or other outdoor hazards which may affect your pooch.

Most are stuffed with polyfill, often have cedar chips to repel odors and their covers are removable and machine washable. Make sure the sides aren’t too high or there is a lower opening so that your hound won’t have to jump to get in and out.

There are any number of styles of dog bed, such as indoor or outdoor, heated or not, travel or car beds and orthopedic beds for the older canine. Select one that fits your dog’s needs and lifestyle. As your dog gets older you’ll need to consider his needs. Just imagine Grandma climbing into a waterbed with a two-foot frame? Or better yet, imagine her trying to get out! There is a wide selection of dog beds available for the older dog.

At the other end of the scale you might need to consider a a chew proof bed, especially for puppies! Providing your pooch with a high quality bed of his own does far more for for your pet than you’d expect. Make sure it fits and suits your dog and he will be a happy pet for years to come.

How do you clean an electric blanket?

Monday, October 12th, 2009

Can you wash an electric blanket in the washing machine?

~~It depends on the blanket. The one we have is machine washable and dry-able. I have seen others which must be dry cleaned. It’s important to go by the tag for washing instructions on it.

If you are missing your tag, you can probably find out by visiting the company’s website.~~

Can I wash a throw blanket in the washing machine?

Friday, October 9th, 2009

It doesn’t have a care tag on it. It’s old, unused, but FULL of dust. I’m not sure if its an afghan or not, it’s crochet very soft yarn with the yarn fringe on the edges. It’s very lite green & blue. Could I wash it in the machine if I put it on "hand wash" cycle and/or in a garment bag for gentle clothing articles?
Thank you.

I crochet alot of stuff , and I always wash it before the people get it , I wash it on the gentle , or hand wash setting , in cold water , with a mild detergent I use Gain or Ariel, You could wash it in a garment bag , but the hand wash setting will be just fine , and you can either hang it to dry or you can dry it on the low heat setting , or air dry setting, I always dry mine on air dry setting, and they never take very long to dry .
Good Luck

how do i get mold/mildew out of a pink baby blanket?

Friday, October 9th, 2009

i found my daughters pink baby blanket and it has mold/mildew from sitting in a pile after being wet (yea i know should’ve taken care of it when it got wet) the blanket it like sweater material. I have tried washing it with Biz, what else can I try? I have heard vinegar but what kind white or apple cider and how much do i put in the washing machine with it. Any other suggestions would be great.

I would try using color safe bleach first. Mold is a hard one to get out. My son had a burp rag and it got mold on it (it fell behind the couch and I found it later when I was cleaning, I know its gross) and I had to wash it several times with detergent and color safe bleach.
